A good point, thanks for the heads up. They seem to have got lost somewhere (after moving to a new virtual host). Need to recover them from backups.

@Evan - The main advantage is that unison allows bidirectional transfers (two way) where rsync is more often used for unidirectional transfers (one way).

In the example I describe above, I make changes to my music collection in both places, so it's nice to easily be able to merge these together.

In my mind rsync and unison are different (if similar) tools - I use both!

There is more discussion of this on the <a href="http://www.reddit.com/r/linux/comments/baes1/file_synchronisation_using_unison/c0lsijf" rel="nofollow">reddit thread</a>, although these are not my own words.

The fact that rsync isn't mentioned doesn't make the advice any less valid. Maybe a comparison is a topic for another post though?

I'm curious as to why this is better than the time-tested traditional rsync. The fact that the 600lb gorilla isn't mentioned makes me question the advice.

I'm afraid not. The only machines I still run Gentoo on are headless servers, so screenshots of them are not all that interesting.

I use SVN for all the source code etc for the various projects I work on. This is several commercial(ish) projects and of course all the stuff I write which relates to my PhD research.

It's all SVN over HTTP(S) btw...

Life, work and stuff are all pretty hectic - currently searching for somewhere to live...
